7.1.2 Acute Lower Back Pain (Lumbago)
Description
■ Muscle pain in the lumbar area (longissimus dorsi, iliopsoas, and quadratus lumbo-
rum); with or without radicular pain towards lateral (differential diagnosis: kidney
pain), but no pain radiating to the thigh (acute sciatica)
■ Causes: generally degenerative changes of the spine and especially of the discs
■ No motor deficits, rarely sensory deficits
