■ Blood pressure of > 140/90 mmHg with repeated measurements
■ Predisposing factors: overweight, alcohol, psycho-emotional strain or stress
■ Classification according to aetiology:
– primary (essential) hypertension: cause unknown
– secondary hypertension: caused by another disorder or medication/alcohol
abuse (e.g. endocrine, renal, or pulmonary hypertension)
■ Complications: arteriosclerosis, heart insufficiency, cerebral haemorrhage, dizzi-
ness, visual disturbances, clouding of consciousness
■
Caution:
Secondary hypertension should be excluded by conventional medicine
prior to treatments since it rarely responds to auricular acupuncture. For second-
ary hypertension it is necessary to treat the underlying disorder, surgery may be re-
quired.
