8.2 Respiratory Disorders
199
Description
■ Mainly paroxysmal attacks due to a complete or only partially reversible bronchial con-
striction with an underlying hyperreactive bronchial system
■ Trigger: various exogenous or endogenous stimuli, e.g. allergens, chemical and physical
inhalation irritants
■ The psychological component plays an important role
Point Prescription
The point prescription is determined by RAC-palpation (
3.1.4) rather than the specific
form of asthma. The treatment protocol can be used for acute cases as well as during remis-
sion.

Patients with acute asthma have to be carefully monitored. If there is no treatment re-
sponse within 30 minutes the patient must take medication. Acute severe asthma initially
requires drug therapy.
Treatment Intervals
■ Daily asthma attacks: once daily or every other day
■ Several asthma attacks per week: 2–3 times weekly
■ Milder forms: once weekly until symptoms have disappeared
Treatment Course and Prognosis
■ For recent onset bronchial or allergic asthma: approximately 3 months of treatments
until symptoms disappear
■ For severe chronic bronchial asthma, possibly accompanied by emphysema: approxi-
mately 6 months until there is a significant improvement; sustained treatment results
require monthly treatments for up to 2 years
• It is perfectly possible to cure predominantly allergic forms of asthma.
• If there is a strong psychological component or for longstanding cases it is generally
possible to reduce at least any asthma medication and to discontinue steroidal medi-
cation.
