8.11 Neurological Disorders
8.11.1 Multiple Sclerosis (Encephalomyelitis Disseminata)
The course of MS can vary significantly. Some forms respond well to acupuncture and pa-
tients are without symptoms for many years. Other forms, however, do not respond so
well, in particular if there have been long periods of medication with cortisone or inter-
feron.
Description
■ Inflammatory disease of the central nervous system with focal areas of demyelination
■ Onset primarily between ages 20–40, especially in women; 15 % of cases with higher
familial incidence
