Extraordinary and Secondary Channels
D
Through this function they maintain a regular ex-
change between the body, Earth, and the head, Heaven.
This Heaven and Earth connection is very clear for the
lower
Jingbie
, as they all start or pass through the points
called the “Doorways of the Earth”, and they converge
at points known as “Windows of Heaven”. The French
school relates each
Jingbie
pair to a specificWindow of
Heaven, in this manner the
Jingbie
enhance the func-
tion of the related Window of Heaven:

Protection of the internal organs
The second
function is the protection of the internal organs. As
a last resort when
Xieqi
External Pathogenic factor
(EPF), has not been expulsed by the more superficial
layers, the
Jingjin
or the
Luo Mai
, the
Jingbie
would
divert the EPF from further progression to the
Zang-
Fu
.
Chapter 63 of the Suwen describes “sub
-
collateral’s”,
which is debated as referring to Divergent channels
(Kespi). These collaterals will divert Pathogenic Fac-
tors (EPF) from entering the
Zangfu
.
Wei Qi
is spread superficially via the
Jingjin
Sinew
channels, which do not penetrate the joints but only
involve the tendons and muscles.
According to Master Yuen, the
Wei Qi
deals with
the external climatic pathogenic factors through the
Jingjin
Sinew/Tendino-muscular channels. Emo-
tional factors are dealt with at the
Ying Qi
level by
the
Luo
Network channels. When
Wei Qi
is weak the
pathogenic factor will enter the
Zang-Fu
. But if the
Wei Qi
is just insufficient to expel the EPF, the
Jingbie
will mobilise energy from the deeper
(Yuan/Jing)
level
towards the more superficial
(Wei)
levels, in this man-
ner the pathogen is diverted from themain channel and
the
Zang-Fu
towards the bones and large joints. As a
reminder the
Luo
Network channels do not penetrate
into the large joints.
Master Yuen further explains that
Wei Qi
is a formof
Yang Qi
;
Yang Qi
may either come from Kidney Yang
or from
Du Mai
. When the
Jingbie
direct Qi from the
Yuan
level towards the
Wei
level, they strengthen
Wei
Qi
enough to deal with the pathogen. The structures
that connect with the
Yuan
level but are still relatively
superficial are the bones (joints) where
Jing
Essence
circulates. As the
Jing
Essence level is the most dense it
helps to trap the EPF at the bone layer. It is interesting
to note that the starting points of the
Jingbie
correspond
to major lymph nodes.
The above explanation implies the disease
nemesis
theory relating to musculoskeletal conditions devel-
oping in order to prevent a more serious illness in
the
Zang-Fu
.
For example: if the osteo-articular disease is treated
at the
Jingjin
Sinew level, it may liberate the trapped
EPF from the joints in to the main channels, thus al-
lowing the disease to go deeper, as in the case of a
Bi
Impediment syndrome evolving in to an ulcerative
colitis.
The
Jingbie
participate in the physiology of the head: by

to it:

·

GB-LR: Blood

ST-SP: Fluids
They also activate all the portals/ orifices:
·
·
BL-KI: lower portals: anus and urethra, but also the
throat and the mouth
·
·
GB-LR: eyes, ears, but also uterus and prostate
·
·
ST-SP: mouth, nose and eyes
