Extraordinary and Secondary Channels

In fact they are rooted in the Pre-natal also called
Anterior-Heaven Qi, composed of
Yuan
Source Qi,
the parents
Jing
Essence and the
Zong
Cosmic or
Ancestral Qi.These constitutional energies are simply
referred to as the inherited
Jing
. The inherited
Jing
is
stored in an area between the Kidneys called the lower
Dantian
Cinnabar chamber (see explanation under
RM-4, page 280). This energy is also known as the
Dong Qi
Moving Qi between the Kidneys.
The three primary Extraordinary Vessels,
Chong
,
Ren
and
Du Mai
originate in this space, before emerging
at the perineum, this is the notion called “One source,
three branches”
(Yi Yan San Zhi).
Two acupuncture points directly access and influence
the inherited energy

The Eight Extra Vessels are the link between pre-
Heaven and post-Heaven Qi. The primary role of the
Extraordinary Vessels is to circulate the inherited
Jing
and distribute the
Jing
to all the areas of the body and
allow for the integration of the inherited vital ener-
gies in to the acquired Post-natal or Posterior-heaven
energy. The unfolding of this inherited
Jing
represents
the cycles of growth: maturity, puberty, development,
conception, pregnancy, and aging. This
Jing
as it is
stored and protected by the Kidneys is the basis of all
the metabolic processes through its transformation
in to Kidney Qi under the influence of Kidney Fire.
This process of transformation of
Jing
into Qi, and it’s
subsequent distribution to the
Zang-Fu
is known as
the TripleWarmer process which is responsible for the
production of the three substances by the Stomach and
Spleen, referred to as white, grey and red substances,
in the form of Qi, comprised of
Ying
Nourishing and
Wei
Defensive energies,
Jinye
Fluids and
Xue
Blood.
Jing
also generates the bone via the marrow and it
nourishes the brain, hence maintaining the Curious
Fu
Bowels.
